On August 12, 2026, Spain will host one of its most exciting astronomical events in recent memory — a total solar eclipse, during which the moon’s shadow will sweep in from the Atlantic just before sunset. But with the sun perilously low in the sky (just 1–7° above the horizon during totality), careful planning is essential. Ridges, headlands and towers are your friends. You’ll need a location with a clear western view, minimal obstructions, and — ideally — good odds for clear skies (use eclipsophile.com to check the climate). Three days out is your best window for cloud predictions.
Here are nine top eclipse-viewing spots across Spain, each with eclipse duration and solar altitude to help you make the best decision.
1. Cabo Ortegal, Galicia
Totality: 1m 46s
Sun Altitude: 12°
Spain’s longest duration and highest solar elevation. Stunning cliff-top views over the Atlantic — but clouds are a gamble.
2. A Coruña, Galicia
Totality: 1m 15s
Sun Altitude: 12°
Urban convenience with strong eclipse credentials. Go west in town for better horizons, with the iconic Tower of Hercules a unique viewing platform in a wide open space.

3. León, Castile and León
Totality: 1m 45s
Sun Altitude: 9°
Home to many churches and cathedrals, León has lots of hotels and is close to the centerline. It also has some of Spain’s best weather odds. It’s a 2-hour train ride from Madrid.
4. Burgos, Castile and León
Totality: 1m 44s
Sun Altitude: 8°
Flat terrain, clear skies, and easy access make Burgos one of the most reliable choices judged purely on climate.
5. Palencia, Castile and León
Totality: 1m 42s
Sun Altitude: 8°
Wide rural views and low cloud risk make Palencia ideal for eclipse chasers who want simple logistics. It’s less than two hours from Madrid by train.

7. Segovia, Castile and León
Totality: 59s
Sun Altitude: 7°
Iconic Roman aqueduct and charming views — but you’ll need to leave town for a clean western skyline.
8. Mirador de la Trapa, Mallorca
Totality: 1m 36s
Sun Altitude: 2.7°
This cliffside lookout offers one of Europe’s most scenic eclipse spots. Perfect for a romantic sunset totality over the sea.
9. Pont d’en Gil, Menorca
Totality: 1m 12s
Sun Altitude: 2°
A natural rock bridge on the west coast of Menora near Ciutadella. It’s a 10 minute walk from a car park.
