Eclipse 2026

Spain’s 2026 eclipse will be spectacular — but only if you plan carefully

The Aug. 12, 2026, total solar eclipse will put northern Spain in the moon’s shadow, but mountains and clouds could all too easily block the view.

Spain will be one of the most popular places to see the total solar eclipse on Aug. 12, 2026, but it will not be a simple case of turning up and looking skyward. Although the path of totality crosses northern Spain, the eclipsed sun will be low in the west-northwest, especially in eastern Spain and the Balearic Islands. That means buildings, trees, hills or distant clouds could easily block the view at the crucial moment.

There are five common ways eclipse travelers could accidentally miss totality: staying outside the path, choosing a poor horizon, underestimating Spain’s mountainous terrain, misunderstanding weather forecasts and getting trapped in traffic.

Wise eclipse chasers will scout observing sites in advance, prioritize clear sightlines over pretty scenery, and remain flexible until the final weather picture becomes clear.

For Spain in 2026, the rule is simple: totality is not enough — you need a clear sightline to it.

Here are some handy resources:

The Eclipse App: includes precise timings, a visualization of exactly where shadows will fall during totality, a countdown and real-time weather.

Eclipse Horizon Checker lets you enter exact coordinates (which you can get from Google Maps), then checks the sightlines and adds a comment on tree canopy cover if relevant.

Instituto Geográfico Nacional: assesses the sightline to the eclipse for any point highlighted on its map
TPE (The Photographer’s Ephemeris): a simulator that allows the user to see precisely where on the horizon the eclipse will take place.

PhotoPills: a smartphone app that lets you see where the eclipse will be on the horizon.
