Chase the northern lights with us in Arctic Norway
Following successful aurora adventures to northern Sweden in 2025 and 2026, we’re heading even farther north for a 7-day New Scientist Discovery Tour through Tromsø and Svalbard.
In March 2027, we’ll be traveling to Arctic Norway for a journey built around one of the sky’s most spellbinding sights: the northern lights. This 7-day tour begins in Tromsø, one of the world’s great aurora cities, before continuing to Longyearbyen in Svalbard, a remote Arctic outpost above 78° north.
By day, we’ll explore fjords, glaciers, museums, polar history and Arctic wildlife habitats. Highlights include Norway’s largest planetarium at the Northern Norwegian Science Center, an Arctic fjord cruise, the Fjellheisen cable car, dog sledding to the Scott Turner glacier, an ice cave visit, Camp Barentz, the Svalbard Museum and the polar landscapes around Longyearbyen.
By night, the focus turns skyward. Jamie Carter, editor of this website, will accompany the tour throughout, giving talks, joining aurora hunts and helping guests understand and photograph the science and spectacle of the aurora borealis.
No northern lights trip can guarantee clear skies or geomagnetic activity — but this itinerary is designed to put us in the right place, at the right season, with the right expert guidance.
